The Bosporan Kingdom was the Roman province from 63 to 68 AD and located in the eastern Crimea. Now this is not far from the present-day town Kerch.

How to get to Ancient Rome? Well, we can watch a movie, make a virtual tour, play a game, read a book, and even listen to appropriate music. Nevertheless, there is one more simple way: just visit any of the reconstruction festivals. The latest took place in June 2015 in Moscow Park Kolomenskoye, a former royal estate. The historical festival ‘Ancient Rome' came after the previous events: Ancient Russia in person (2011), The Moscow Kingdom (2012), Middle Ages (2013), World War I (2014).
In hot June days, the city park turned into the Roman military camp. Then, the Forum, the Celtic camp, the Bosporan Kingdom, Judea and Palestine invited the guests.
Over a hundred interactive and animation actions happened here during the next two days. They included training sessions, shows, band and theatre performances, market offers.
Mars Field was the place to show the Romans' attack tactics. Here, competitions in fencing and front fight, battle with Germans, contests in-group fights occurred. The theatre performances, gladiators' confrontations and performances of the Roman cavalry were on the Arena.
Over 300,000 people visited the festival, got familiar with the ancient Roman civilization. They observed some scenes from the feudal life, studied the formation of regular army and legislation. People also saw the construction of fortifications, buildings and roads.
About 2,000 participants and actors came from twelve countries: Italy, Israel, the Czech Republic, Austria, France, Greece, Austria, Belarus, Romania, Tunisia, the Netherlands, Russia. They all helped reconstruct the unique ancient world. So, how to avoid paying tribute to these people? They resignedly posed for lots of shootings, greeted a never-ending chain of curious people. Moreover, they firmly endured a heat standing dressed in woven suits and metallic armour.
Malls with a set of various goods, gifts and souvenirs attracted fans of antiquity.
Mars Field
This area, the biggest at the festival, reproduced large-scale battles between the Romans and barbarians. Here warriors carried out maneuvering and fighting collisions, demonstrated military tactics.
Roman military camp
The Roman military camp engaged everyone. How could one go away from the place where the Romans led the routine military life? They were holding front and individual trainings, changing guards, cooking, checking of defensive equipment, constructing a watch tower.
Forum
The next after the military cap went the Forum. The cultural life was boiling here! Benches of dealers and handicraftsmen. Market of slaves and gladiator school. Even before the Roman domination, the Bosporan Kingdom had had the rich Greek-Barbarian culture. At the festival, the reconstructors presented potters, masons, jewelers, spinners, weavers, musicians, wrestlers.
Judea and Palestine
The sketches from life of Judea and Palestine did not leave the visitors indifferent. People viewed the way of wool spinning, olive oil extraction, flour grinding, cuneiform writing, cooking, in-field training.
Celtic camp
The mysterious village of Celts was full of sounds, smells and images. We could listen to bards' songs and fortunetellers' low voices. We could breathe in the balmy air of herbs at the druids. We could also admire blue tattoos on Celts, glass and jewelry processing, leather footwear production.
Training field
The next platform attracted primarily children as they trained to handle with spears, bows. In addition, they tried practicing the infantry attacks.
Conclusion
Summing up, the festival has become one of Moscow most remarkable events. It lasted only two days, and the program was so various! The events occurred and changed quickly, it was not easy to watch everything. Still, the impression is so pleasant and stimulating! Thus, come the next one, we will be waiting!
